Celebrations:
a leadership project and a new book series |
|
With this one hundredth issue of our e-newsletter
we are celebrating the imminent second birthday of the Federation's Hong
Kong 200 Leadership Project and the launch of our
first series of books, Youth & Leadership.
Hong Kong 200 is a ten-year leadership project for students
with a serious commitment to serve Hong Kong. The book series
parallels the effort and is dedicated to the young people we
serve, striving to develop their leadership potential and skills.
|
Leadership training is one of our
core services. It nurtures a sense of social responsibility
intrinsic to the contribution young people can make to their
city. We hope that both the books and the training project
will help them to generate the strength they need to tackle
future challenges. A launch ceremony for both events will be
held on 19 May. See Upcoming Events for details
and Feature Story for some feedback from our young leaders.
With sincere thanks to the principal sponsor of Hong
Kong 200, Dr Raymond Chan, DBA, JP. |

HK200's 1st anniversary: local
youth leaders talk about priorities
Participants in the Federation's 2006 leadership training programme, Hong Kong
200, talked about current policy issues as they prepare to be group leaders for
the Hong Kong 200 Network. Joling, in Form 7 at St Francis Canossian College,
said she felt rather proud of recent developments in HK, especially the increased
awareness of topical issues:
|
|
|
|
|
'I feel quite optimistic about Hong Kong's future.
I think the economy will continue improving slowly
even though it is not possible to have universal suffrage
quickly.'
Four out of the five students we talked to thought
it was too soon for universal suffrage to be introduced:
'We are going in the right direction', said
Samuel who is doing Biology at HKU, 'but the
most important thing is that universal suffrage is
part of a pattern of stable development which is
really beneficial to Hong Kong.'
|
When asked to comment on priority issues in general,
Fiona who is in Form 7 at St Rose of Lima's College
in Shatin, was also analytical about the need for democracy:
'Universal suffrage represents a crucial stepping
stone for Hong Kong people. Only when the issue has
been fully addressed will people here be able to
show their confidence in Mainland policy and truly
believe in what communist China is capable of.' |
|
|
For Joling, pollution is the top priority as it is for Mavis,
another Form 7 student:
'We really must do something,' she said. 'Promoting
the 'Blue Sky' theme is not enough.'
George who is doing law at Chinese U was upbeat about
Hong Kong's potential role in this respect:
'Hong Kong has the chance to pioneer the reduction
of waste products and promote cleaner energy sources
as a cooperative effort with Guangdong province.'
He was also confident that 'one man vote' would become
a reality in the near future:
'Mr Tsang has made a promise to solve the problem
of universal suffrage during his term of office so
this should certainly be a focus for the coming government.' |
|
|
The relationship between Hong Kong and the Mainland has naturally
been at the forefront of the minds of participants in Hong
Kong 200. Their training has included segments in both regions
and the curriculum covers the Basic Law as well as foreign and
social policy in China.
|
|
'It is very important for us to get a rounded
perspective on the current scene and how it has developed,' said
Fiona. For Mavis and Joling, meeting policymakers and
community leaders was the highlight. Both mentioned
the meeting with Peter Wong of HSBC:
'He gave us such practical suggestions for dealing
with everyday problems as well as talking about the
banking sector,' commented Mavis.
The launch of the
2007 Hong Kong 200 programme takes place next
week and the Hong Kong 200 alumni network will then begin
its work in earnest. These five students are all group
leaders who will act as coordinators next year so they
need to feel well prepared:
|
'We need to co-ordinate efforts by HK200 members so that
they care about the community and understand how important
it is to tackle social issues,' said Joling.
'Sharing attitudes and values about Hong Kong's development
is essential,' said Samuel. 'We can be active in
promoting discussion of hot topics in order to raise awareness.'
For the majority, the most important aspects of leadership
are integrity and commitment to goals. Listening well also
comes high on the list. These priorities will stand them in
good stead in the year to come and bode well for the Hong
Kong 200 Network in future.

Facts & Figures |
HKFYG poll: youth
leaders on policy issues |
|
HKFYG's Leadership 21 youth research
centre interviewed 330 secondary school students occupying
positions of leadership in March this year about their expectations
of the newly re-appointed Chief Executive.* The top 5 jobs
they wanted him to deal with were solving the gap between the
rich and the poor (43.9%) followed closely by improvement of
air quality (43.3%), implementing universal suffrage (41.2%),
education reform (34.5%) and economic development (26.4%). |
|
Youth leaders interviewed
in the HKFYG poll said the most important tasks for the CE
to tackle where youth affairs were concerned, were increased
spending to improve the quality of teaching and learning
(25%), a solution to youth unemployment and an increase in
youth employment opportunities (20%), followed by encouragement
for youth leaders to participate in social affairs (16%).
When asked how the CE could best achieve such encouragement
nearly 30% said the CE should 'increase their knowledge of
Hong Kong society and China's affairs by organizing activities'
or opening up more channels through which young people could
express views and participate in social services (27%). Just
over 10% said that frequent communication between government
officials and youth organizations should be promoted.
An earlier survey **of 3,322 15-30 year-olds found that
over 76% would have liked to see universal suffrage implemented
in time for the election of the CE this year although many
considered Hong Kong too immature for full democracy. Increased
civic awareness was the top priority in this poll and over
50% thought that quality of governance would improve if the
CE was democratically elected.
In the advent of the 10th anniversary of the HKSAR, a poll
of Hongkongers' views of the 'one country, two systems' shows
a surge in confidence in Beijing*** although there has been
a recent drop in the popularity ratings of the CE. Nevertheless,
trust in the HK government in general has risen to 63%, the
highest figure for the last 12 months.
